A sports bar with a mechanical bull is opening in Cary

Usually when you hear “PBR” in a bar you’re thinking a cheap American lager with a blue ribbon on the can.

And when you hear mechanical bull, you’re probably not thinking Cary.

A new bar in the Fenton development is upending lots of expectations. Put one hand in the sky and let it fly.

The PBR Cowboy Bar will join Fenton, the development’s owners Hines and Columbia Development announced Wednesday. PBR stands for Professional Bull Riders and the Cowboy Bar celebrates all things sports and bull riding, right down to a mechanical bull.

This will be the first PBR Cowboy Bar in North Carolina and the 11th in the nation, joining cities like Baltimore, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Most are built as part of major sports stadiums and casinos.

After three years of work, Fenton started opening shops this summer in Cary, with stores like Williams Sonoma, Sephora and the Paragon Theater among the first to open up.

Fenton’s restaurants and bars, like M Sushi, Colletta and Dram & Draught will open soon.

The Cary Cowboy Bar looks to open by summer 2023.

“Our PBR Cowboy Bar concept continues to expand thanks to staying true to our brand and an extraordinary partnership with Live! Hospitality & Entertainment,” said PBR CEO and commissioner Sean Gleason.

“PBR Cowboy Bars are now located in 10 cities around the country. To be able to open our first PBR Cowboy Bar in North Carolina, where we recently welcomed the Carolina Cowboys to the new PBR Team Series, is incredibly exciting for our brand and for our fans.”

The Cowboy Bar will be about 4,300 square feet and be built next door to the new Sports & Social, a gigantic 22,000 sports entertainment complex. At Fenton, the Cowboy Bar will also have a 1,300 square foot patio.

“We are incredibly excited to continue our partnership with Professional Bull Riders to bring the iconic PBR Cowboy Bar to North Carolina for the first time at Fenton,” said Reed Cordish, principal of The Cordish Companies and CEO of Live! Hospitality & Entertainment, the company that created PBR Cowboy Bar and Sports & Social. “PBR Cowboy Bar will bring a premier country western entertainment experience to the Triangle region when it opens next year.”
