Durham
Two people were shot, one fatally, in a Durham neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, according to the Durham Police Department.
The shooting happened in the 2500 block of South Roxboro Street and East Cornwallis Road, the Police Department reported.
Officers responded to a shooting at 1:59 p.m. and found a man who had been shot, according to a press release. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.
Durham Police announced Thursday that the shooting victim has been identified as Derek Ortiz of Cary. He was 21.
A woman also was shot during this incident and sustained non-life threatening injuries, police say.
Durham investigators say the shooting does not appear to have been random, according to a news release.
The police department said later Wednesday that a man was in custody and is charged with resist, delay or obstruct. The department didn’t identify the suspect.
Neither victims in the shooting have been identified.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to the police department.
South Roxboro Street is currently closed between Charles Street and East Cornwallis Road, police say.
A press conference on the shooting is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, according to the police department’s Watch Commander.

As of Aug. 6, 140 people have been shot in Durham this year, 23 of them fatally, according to Durham Police Department data.
Since January, the city has had 453 shootings.
