Earlier this year, readers told us which Raleigh restaurant, diner or grill they’d most like to resurrect, and now it’s Chapel Hill’s turn to vote.
Our list of long-gone greats, from Franklin Street and beyond, isn’t comprehensive, but we think all of the entries here are deserving of a comeback. The list was put together with the help of a little internet sleuthing and consultations with a panel of proud (and hungry) UNC-Chapel Hill alums.
The result: 20 solid candidates that any self-respecting Tar Heel would trade a year’s worth of Panera Bread visits for one trip back in time (no offense to Panera).
A couple of notes, before we get to the voting:
▪ This is not a scientific poll. You can vote as often as you like. But we would like to point out that when we voted in Raleigh, readers picked Darryls, and in a matter of months, Darryls announced it may return to the cap city.
▪ We did not include Crooks Corner — even though it is closed and super beloved — because we’re told it’s going to return very soon.
▪ We did not include Allen & Son Bar-B-Q, which closed its Chapel Hill location in 2018, because there’s still one in Pittsboro. A controversial call, perhaps, but we’ll take the heat.
▪ You can vote for up to three restaurants on the list at each visit to the story.
▪ There’s a spot below the list for you to tell us what we left off (or you can email me at bcain@newsobserver.com).
We’ll report the results of the voting on Monday, Aug. 8.
