Tex-Mex restaurant Superica to open at Cary’s Fenton center

A “beloved” Tex-Mex restaurant from an award-winning chef will open at Cary’s Fenton mixed-use development later this month, but local foodies can get a sneak peek — plus free tacos — at the space even sooner.

Superica, an Austin, Texas-style eatery that offers “a vibrant menu of margaritas, tacos, wood-grilled flavors and everything al carbon” will officially open in Cary on Sept. 26. It will be the 10th location of the restaurant nationwide, and the second in North Carolina, with another location in Charlotte.

To celebrate the restaurant’s opening, Superica will host a breakfast taco pop-up event at the Cary restaurant on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9-11 a.m. At the event, guests will receive a ticket for one free breakfast taco of their choice.

Superica is owned by Ford Fry, an Atlanta-based chef and restaurateur with restaurants Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Charlotte and now, Cary. He is a five-time semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Restaurateur award.

“We are excited to join the Fenton development and are looking forward to bringing flavors inspired by Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants in the South to the Cary community,” Fry said in a release announcing the restaurant’s opening.

“The atmosphere of the Old West has been preserved for the enjoyment of all guests and we want Superica to be a place where people can come with their friends and have a good time while enjoying the flavors and vibe of an old Texas dance hall or cafe.”

The Cary Superica “will pay homage to Fry’s roots and memories growing up in Texas” and offer “signature, distinct flavors inspired by Fry’s Northern Mexican-meets-Texas ranch style of cooking.”

The menu, organized by Fry’s “Tex-Mex Playbook classics” will include crispy beef tacos, super soft just made flour tortillas, cheese enchiladas with San Antonio style chili gravy, queso fundido, plus “more evolved” dishes such as wood-grilled fajitas, pork belly carnitas, posole and ceviche.

The restaurant’s cocktail menu will have “an emphasis on Texas-made spirits, agave spirits and margaritas.”

The Cary Superica space, designed by Smith Hanes, who has designed other Superica locations around the South, “will be a colorful outpost reminiscent of Texas dance halls and Hill Country cafes tied together with a mix of vintage elements and unique artwork with a slight modern twist.” The 5,500 square-foot interior space will seat 128, while a “spacious” 2,000 square-foot outdoor patio will seat 72.

Superica at Fenton is located at 25 Fenton Main Street, Suite 110 in Cary. The restaurant will be open seven days a week with brunch offered on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit superica.com.

Additional restaurant options at Fenton

The dining scene at Fenton continues to fill out, with several restaurants already open and more on the way.

Colletta, an Italian concept from major Southeastern restaurateur Steve Palmer’s Indigo Road Hospitality Group, earlier this month became the first restaurant to open at the development.

M Sushi, a popular Durham sushi spot that’s regarded as the Triangle’s top sushi restaurant, opened last week.

In addition to Colletta and M Sushi, Fenton’s online dining directory shows four other restaurants that are now open: Carriage House Coffee, CRU Food & Wine Bar, Honeysuckle Gelato and The Agency Bar + Social.

More restaurants are expected to open soon, including a new Dram & Draught cocktail bar and the Crawford Brothers Steakhouse from Raleigh chef Scott Crawford. The development is also set to offer a sports bar, Sports & Social, plus a new professional bull riding-themed bar, the PBR Cowboy Bar.

Fenton officially opened in June with a grand opening “extravaganza” to celebrate.
