People really seem to want to visit this particular country.

Everybody wants to get away these days.

There’s been a surge in travel ever since vaccines became available, as people have been wanting to make up for lost time. Last year, the demand for travel far outstripped the number of available flights, thanks to the ongoing pilot shortage, which led to a wave of flight cancellations and delays.

But now we have a clearer sense of just how great the appetite for travel really was in 2022.

According to the National Travel and Tourism Office’s latest data, Total inbound International visitation to the U.S. hit 4.8 million in January, a 93 percent increase from a year before. Interestingly, it also amounts to a 82 percent increase from January 2019. This marks the twenty-second consecutive month of year over year international growth.

Where Are People Traveling?

The top source markets (i.e. the places people flew from) were Canada, Mexico, the UK, South Korea and Brazil; accounting for around 70 percent of pre-pandemic January 2019’s visitor volume. 1.9 million people traveled from overseas, a 91 percent increase year over year.

The total outbound number of people traveling from the United States amounted to 6.4 million, a 60 percent year over year increase, representing 99 percent of pre-pandemic January 2019’s total.

In terms of North America, Mexico and Canada combined made up 54 percent of U.S. visitor departures, and overseas (i.e. not North America) made up 46 percent. Mexico was the top outbound market for U.S. visitors, followed by the Caribbean.
