UNC football: Heels defensive back Don Chapman arrested and released

North Carolina senior defensive back Don Chapman was arrested early Thursday in Chatham County stemming from an alleged incident with a female companion, records show.

Chapman, 21, was arrested by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and booked at 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the Chatham County Detention Center. Chapman was released Thursday afternoon.

He is charged with domestic criminal trespassing, assault on a woman and misdemeanor battery of an unborn child, according to the Chatham Clerk of Court’s office.

The clerk’s office confirmed to the News & Observer that Chapman had a court appearance Thursday and the case will be continued to Oct. 19.

During a pretrial release assessment in Chatham County court Thursday, the judge read from the police report that the 22-year-old woman, who is pregnant, had a gun and threatened to kill herself, according to WRAL. Chapman took the firearm away from the woman, which is when the assault took place, according to the report. No one was injured.

The woman also was served with an outstanding warrant from Durham County that was unrelated to Thursday morning’s arrest, Lt. Sara Pack, the chief public information officer for the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, told the N&O via email. WRAL reported the woman was named as the defendant in that case and Chapman was listed as the victim.

The judge released Chapman on a written promise to appear in court in October. He was ordered to not have any contact — directly or indirectly — with the woman, and he must stay at least 1,000 feet away from her. Chapman will be allowed to retrieve any personal belongings from the home that they share, but only with a law enforcement escort.

Chapman’s status with the team and availability for Carolina’s game on Saturday at Georgia State were unknown as of Thursday afternoon. A statement from a UNC team spokesman said, “We’ve been made aware of a situation involving one of our student-athletes and we’re working to gather more information.”

Chapman played in the Tar Heels’ season-opening win over Florida A&M, but he did not make an appearance in last week’s game at Appalachian State. After starting four games last season, the San Diego native is listed as a backup safety to Gio Biggers.
