Publix Super Markets, a Florida-based grocery chain with locations across the Southern states, has leased a plot of land in Durham for another Triangle store, the company announced Wednesday.
The new Publix at Latta Park will sit at the southeast corner of Guess and Latta roads, about eight miles north of downtown.
The 42,000-square-foot grocery store is the second Triangle project Publix announced in the last month. The company said in May it will erect a 45,000-square-foot space on undeveloped land in Raleigh at the intersection Buffaloe and Forestville roads.
“Publix is always looking to grow across the Triangle area and provide its premier customer service and quality foods to future customers,” Jared Glover, a Publix spokesperson, previously told The News & Observer.
Publix has not released construction timelines for its new Durham and Raleigh facilities. Upon their completion, the Triangle will have 12 Publix locations.
The chain opened its first area store in 2014 at The Bradford in Cary. Its arrival sparked controversy, including an unsuccessful lawsuit. Now, Publix is available in Apex, Raleigh, Wake Forest and other Triangle towns.
A Rolesville Publix is under construction and will open in 2023 as part of a $120 million mixed-use development, The N&O reported. The development will include grocery, retail, restaurant, residential and medical uses.
