UNC football coach Mack Brown will be spending some time with his toes in the sand this summer.

The 70-year-old coach and his wife, Sally Brown, just spent $10 million on a beach house on a island off the North Carolina coast, according to New Hanover County property records.

The 5,579-square-foot oceanfront home is on Figure Eight Island, a gated barrier island near Wilmington that’s known as an enclave for the wealthy.

It’s accessible by a single two-lane bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and boasts no commercial developments, just 475 or so privately owned homes, according to Figure Eight Realty.

How many homes does Mack Brown own in North Carolina?

The Browns’ new vacation home has five bedrooms that sleep plenty more, six full bathrooms and two half-baths. It’s on a half-acre lot overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The 4-year-old home spans four levels, its interior soaked in light from dozens of windows. The airy living room, kitchen and dining area all had touches of Carolina blue.

It has a bar, an elevator, two washers and dryers, a fireplace, garage spaces for two and ample space for entertaining.

In addition to the $10 million price tag, which Zillow reports was $900,000 under asking, the Browns will also be paying homeowner association fees that amount to $5,690 a year. Taxes on the home were $21,569 last year, according to property records.

Mack Brown coached at UNC for 10 seasons from 1988 to 1997, returning to lead the program again in the 2019 season.

His contract with UNC was extended in March for another five years. He makes $3.5 million a year, The N&O reported.

County records show the Browns sold a nearby home on May 19, a week before their latest purchase, for $9.5 million. They bought that property in 2020 for $5 million.

Both homes are on the island, located one mile apart, with wooden walkways extending to the ocean. They are about 150 feet from the white sand beaches, which stretch approximately 300 feet to the waves, according to satellite imagery shot this year.

The new structure is on property that has a 0.2% annual chance of flooding, according to the state’s Flood Risk Information System. More precise information about the home’s flood risk has not been uploaded since the home was built.

The Browns bought their Chapel Hill residence in 2019 for just over $2 million. They’ve owned property off the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina mountains since 1994, tax records show.
